Fall so far

It has been awhile since I've posted so here is pretty much a summary of the major things I've done the last couple months:

  • School
    • Going well, very busy, so far keeping all A's... hope it lasts
  • Work
    • Got all new clients, had to start working mornings as well as nights, was VERY stressful and unenjoyable
    • October 8th I stopped working... I feel much happier now
  • Nathan's birthday
    • It was a lot of fun.  My dad and brother Nathan came down to celebrate with us.  We went to PF Changs in Loveland, CO to eat and just relaxed.  Nathan got some pens and new socks from me and tickets for us to see a Denver Broncos game from my parents!  I know pens and socks seems like a really lame gift, but when you share a bank account with someone expensive gifts just don't seem as special. Also, that was all he really asked for so it worked out.
  • Family
    • My family has been really great about visiting us over the last couple months.  My mom, grandma, and little sister were just here last weekend to watch Nathan sing in From Cummorah's Hill.  Nathan sounded amazing, as usual (watching Nathan sing is one of my favorite things, I'm always so proud!)
That is pretty much it, not too exciting.  We do have a couple fun things coming up.  Next weekend Nathan and I are going to Provo to watch UW play BYU in football.  It will be fun because we will get to see my family, but also because Kevin Shumway might be coming to the game with Mary.  It will be fun if they can make it, we are excited to meet her and see him again.  Another fun thing coming up is Halloween.  I LOVE Halloween.  There is really no need for me to dress up, but I think it is really fun anyway.  Life is good!

A Brother Weekend

My two oldest brothers came up this weekend to visit Nathan and I before we all start school.  They are both headed to BYU-I so we won't get to see them very often.  It was a lot of fun having them here! We went to Cheyenne and saw Toy Story 3, so we didn't do anything really exciting but I really enjoyed just having them around and talking to them.  They also taught a primary class for me since one of the teachers was gone on Sunday, thanks guys! I miss them a lot and I wish we could live closer together.

Goodbye Summer

School starts one week from tomorrow... I'm not too excited about it but I guess some good things come with it.  We get football games, a more regular schedule... yeah that is about it.  I am going to miss summer but I think I got a lot out of summer this year.  Nathan and I both only worked part time so we got to spend a lot of time together for our first summer as a married couple.  We went to Waterworld at least once, went to a family reunion, we will get to see both of our brothers come home off missions, and a lot of other things.  Altogether not a bad summer!  One thing I'm dreading more than anything about the coming semester is the cold weather, school wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't combined with the frozen wasteland that is Laramie nine months out of the year.

My Scare at the Pool

Today I went to the rec center to do some lap swimming.  The pool was almost completely full when I got there.  About half way through my swim I realized that I was the only one left swimming.  At first I thought it was great; nice and quiet, nobody to see me so I didn't have to feel self-conscious about my terrible swimming.  However; on one of my laps, about half way across the pool, I thought I felt a wave push me a little bit to the side.  I figured there must be someone swimming in the lane next to me so I sort of looked around...still nobody but me.  My first thought was...."what if it was a shark?"  I immediately started frantically making my way to the side of the pool, all swimming technique forgotten.  It was a spluttering, dog paddling, clawing mess all the way to the wall.  When I got to the side I seriously considered getting out of the pool because I was so afraid.  The only reason I was able to finish my laps was because I thought church songs in my head the rest of the time.

Yes, I am an idiot.  But there are two pretty good explanations for my irrational fear:

  1. I have regularly been watching episodes from Shark Week on the Discovery Channel
  2. When I was little I watched a James Bond movie where the bad guy had a secret chamber in his pool that, if opened, released a man eating shark. I have had a hard time being alone in a pool ever since.

Primary Fun

I taught sharing time in primary a couple weeks ago and asked the question: "What kinds of things do we do that might make it hard for us to hear the Holy Ghost?"

Senior Primary: "be mean to our families, not read our scriptures, fight with our friends...."

Junior Primary: "do drugs, drink alcohol, steal cars, hit animals...murder people".

Yep, that oughta do it junior primary.

Happily Oppressed

While I was looking for a fun activity to do in primary for Father's day I came across a very interesting blog...it is called "Feminist Mormon Housewives". I only read a few posts before I felt like my head was going to explode, but I just want to share a couple of my absolute favorites.

Q: "What do you think? Is it possible to give a Father’s Day talk that doesn’t skirt the issue or use the word preside?"
A: "I spoke on Father’s Day once. I talked about when Lehi faltered as a Father...Mainly though, I talked about the historicity of small metal recurve bows and how the arrows of a small metal bow would be too short for a normal wooden bow made from a tree. I don’t think I skirted any issues." (This one gave me a good idea for primary...talk about all the mistakes Father's make and the rest of the time discuss the rich and complicated history of Central and South America...or something else that has nothing to do with the subject).

Q: "While my feelings about the male-only Priesthood are complicated and unresolved, I know how I feel about some other gender issues – I reject patriarchy. This might make lesson 14, “Patriarchal Leadership in the Home”, a little awkward. So….. for those of you who don’t accept a black and white version of male-only Priesthood, patriarchy in the home, women’s divine roles, etc., how do you cope when you have to teach these topics in a Gospel setting? Is it okay for the youth to know other perspectives exist? What do you do?"
A1: "my concern is that the young women have to realize that a 12 year old boy has more power and is more important than his mother in the eyes of the patriarchal church."
A2 (My FAVORITE!): "The true answer is the sexist answer: girls have awesomeness, direct from Mother. Father and Son can’t give this direct awesomeness because they aren’t Mother, so they get to give males a chance to place someone ELSE at the center of existence. Only when males are spiritually doing this are they getting close to the awesomeness Mother gave her daughters. Father and Son are awesome because they figured out how the priesthood can teach them to be awesome in a male way. Because the Natural man is what? An enemy to God? Maybe, but that’s harsh. More like the natural man is kinda douchey."

About the Young Women's broadcast:
"I know what I don’t want to hear. I don’t want to hear about virtue, I don’t want to hear about anything pink or soft. I don’t want to hear about how the world is dangerous or coarse or vulgar."

"Today at church I was sitting in the chapel, watching over the kids practicing for the primary program (suffice it to say I consider primary program practices the height of disrespect to children)"

"Apparently the “ward council” (turns out just two chauvinistic, middle-class, middle-aged, white, males present at said meeting) has decided without the input of mothers that we need to either nurse in the mothers lounge or cover the baby with a blanket. Like the baby is the obscene part? Knowing breasts are under shirts is bad enough I guess, but having a baby connected to them (and hiding said breast with babe’s head) make everyone squirm?
I was very upfront and said I have huge issues with this. That this is a public health issue, and the law says that women can nurse anytime anywhere. I said I feel like I’m doing society a service. If people don’t see breastfeeding, they won’t think it’s normal and won’t breastfeed their children". (I'm guessing this lady is ok with pornography...if people don't see it they will think it isn't normal).

"A large part of what we do on this site is share our dreams about how we wish the church could be different. What is there to do about it? What are approaches that are actually meaningful for creating change in the church? When oppressive conditions exist (and in my opinion, the status of women in the church is inarguably oppressive), it is because an oppressor is making a decision that denies full personhood to the oppressed. By doing so, they are denying their own full humanity. The only way to end this is to stop the oppression. By stopping the oppressor." (watch your back men of the church haha).

ANYWAY...
Needless to say, I think these women belong to the wrong church. Either that, or they are getting something completely different out of it than I am. I know this post is a little long, but I could not keep all of these... interesting... posts to myself.

Fun with the Family

Nathan and I took a trip to Evanston so we could get an x-ray for his foot, visit my family, and so I could go to my much needed hair appointment. While we were there we got to watch my sister's dance recital. She is turning 10 in five days and she is SO beautiful! I got these really cute pictures of her and my parents after the recital, I sure do love my family!

Ahhh! A Monster!!!!

Today when Nathan and I were at Wal-mart we saw a monster! It wasn't a big furry monster with sharp teeth, it was a girl about sixteen years old. We were in one of the aisles and there was a woman in a motorized wheelchair, and the "monster" pushing a cart behind her. The woman in a joking manner said, "hey, you're lagging behind". The girl shouted back, "I'm checking things off the list, you can wait or I'll throw your list away". The woman just looked really dejected and said, "Ok". Nathan and I gave each other one of those looks saying, "WOW". I kind of put it out of my mind as we went on shopping, but of course we ran into them again. This time we were in a very busy aisle and we were trying to squeeze past them. The woman said, "excuse us", and began to back up her wheelchair so we could get by. Then the girl yelled, "My feet, move it"!!!! (her feet weren't even close to being run over by the way). The woman gave us an apologetic look and took off. The girl was literally yelling at her Mom and talking to her in such a disrespectful way that I couldn't believe it was happening, let alone in public. We've been home for about an hour and I still can't stop thinking about it. I don't know what I would have said, but I honestly wish I could have said something to that girl. I suppose that is her parents job...they raised a monster and now it has turned on them. Yay for trips to Wal-mart, they remind me why I still believe in spanking.

My Poor Husband

I've realized that I don't get ready as much as I used to... maybe this is just a side effect of getting married.

Run Like the Wind...Or Against it

I got up early this morning and decided to go for a morning jog. It was gorgeous outside. The sun was just coming up, there were no clouds, it was calm and cool, and then...THE WIND CAME!!!! I seriously don't understand how the wind can be blowing directly into my face no matter which direction I go. I think a couple times the wind completely stopped me and I appeared to be doing the running man dance from the 80's. Oh well, that dance is still cool and I guess I got a better work out that way...

Go Away Winter!!!

I just saw a patch of green grass on my way to class!!! And yesterday in my science class we had to dye water with blue food coloring, it reminded me of a swimming pool and made me want to go to Waterworld so bad! I am so ready for winter to be over and summer to start. So, even though the wind is still blowing, it is freezing cold, and it is supposed to snow this week...spring is on its way!
